ObjectivesHealth (Environmental and User health)
Improve storm water remediation around drains that enter the Bellingham Bay and Whatcom Creek with enhanced filtration systems. Further ecological improvements by repairing streets and adding DIG and vertical gardens in alleyways. Filter storm water in alleys with green spaces and green roofs in addition to enhanced drainage systems. Increase the canopy cover of the alleyways. Install sculptures that sequester pollutants. Install one public restroom to increase alley cleanliness and offer access to various users. Implement sustainable design by creating grey-water cycling systems in couple with rainwater harvesting tanks. Creation of mixed use buildings, shops and gathering spaces will increase user safety as a result of more eyes on the street. Implement builds with as many renewable, reusable, local and green resources as possible. LEED certification can be used as a guide. Access Offer more bike storage to encourage multimodal transportation. Distinguish between roadway, sidewalks and alleyways by different materials and gradients to give users a sense of place. Create more mixed use residential buildings to encourage an increase in downtown inhabitants. Creation of residences that vary in housing price to encourage demographic diversity. Social Capital Create more public gathering space in the form of pocket parks, community gardens and plazas. Create connectivity between all three alleys. Encourage more outdoor seating that spills into alleyways. Economics Increase the economic vitality of underutilized space by creating ideal locations for vendors and businesses. Job creation in alleyway renovation, upkeep of pollution sculptures, DIG and vertical gardens, and more. Aesthetics Encourage and commission appropriate street art and sculptures. Highlight visible landmarks and historical sites for users and the alleyway neighborhood. Improve the lighting of the alleyways. Create arch ways and wayfinding signs for each alleyway to give users a sense of place. |
